Phoenix Arizona is home to 1,680,992 people, according to the 2019 census, and is the state capital of Arizona and the only state capital with a population of more the one million inhabitants. Phoenix is the central hub of the greater metropolitan area. This area is also known as the Valley of the Sun because of the Salt River Valley. This urban area has the 11th largest population in the U.S., with about 4.73 million people living in the surrounding area.
The area was first settled in 1867 as an agricultural community near the Salt and Gila rivers and was incorporated as a city in 1881. The salt and Gila river became Arizona Territory in 1889. Untimely, the canal system led to a blooming of the farming community with the original settlers’ crops.
Cotton, cattle, citrus, climate, and copper were the local exports of phoenix exports and known as the “Five C’s,” cementing their economy. These exports were the main focus of the region until after World War II, when tech companies began moving into the area and weather started making Phoenix’s hot summers more endurable.
The Phoenix area has had an average growth percentage rate of four percent over the past 40 years. During the 2007-09 recession, slowed down the growth rate, then eventually slowly rebounded. The city of Phoenix is the cultural center of the state of Arizona.
